When I use the version 1.8.9, I don't see the recording indicator, and when I check the replay viewer it's not there either.
However when I use 1.12 or 1.11 it works just fine.

Please post the contents of the fml-client-latest.log file inside the logs folder inside your .minecraft folder to some pastebin site and link to the post here.

Note that this log will only contain information on the last time you started Minecraft, not any previous runs.

That log is for MC 1.12.2 with an old RM version. So, unless you haven't read the second paragraph of my reply, it's not getting updated for some reason. Try pasting the Game Output log as shown in the launcher (not to be confused with the Launcher Log which doesn't mention the RM).

You're using an old version of the ReplayMod.
An issue similar to what you're describing has already been fixed in 2.1.2 (Changelog: "Fix recording, among other things, sometimes not working in 1.8(.9)").
Please try again with the most recent version and re-post that log if the issue persists.
